Opinion | "Let's connect!": China builds bridges for young people

Jasmine Petty, a student at the University of Sydney, a Chinese social media influencer with 560,000 followers, and winner of the 2023 China-Australia Friendship Micro-Video Competition, expressed her excitement about the Communique of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China during an interview with China Youth Daily. Focusing on themes of peace, technological and social progress, and an improved quality of life, the communique deeply resonated with Petty, who has long been engaged with the Chinese language and culture.
After reviewing the communique, Petty emphasized her attention to the guiding principles for China's economic and social development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), as outlined at the plenary session: upholding the Party's overall leadership, putting the people first, pursuing high-quality development, advancing comprehensive deepening of reform, adhering to the combination of an effective market and a capable government, and balancing development and security.

"Of these principles, 'putting the people first' particularly struck me," Petty said. "If every country prioritizes its people, humanity will have a greater chance of achieving peace, prosperity, and progress. Technological change is accelerating, and we must ensure that technology serves to boost productivity and improve people's lives by creating opportunities for them to contribute to society. I sense a genuine commitment to this goal in China's plans, and that fills me with hope for the future."
Passionate about Chinese culture, Petty has travelled to China multiple times with her family. Her fluency in Mandarin has consistently won her praise from local residents, and she is continually impressed by the country's diverse natural and cultural landscapes. "China is home to countless unique and beautiful places that deserve protection for future generations," she said. "These sites could also be developed as tourist destinations, strengthening the bonds of friendship between Chinese youth and young people from around the world." She also urged China to continue advancing green transition initiatives to build a "beautiful China".
Beyond in-person visits, Petty engages with Chinese youth regularly through her TikTok channel "JLA382", where she shares insights and interacts with followers. "This interaction has deepened my understanding of China," she said. "Let's connect - we hope to make more friends in China!" Jasmine added. (By Jiang Jixuan/China Youth Daily)
