Chinese director Bi Gan's Resurrection, Kuang Ye Shi Dai in Chinese, premiered late Thursday night at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

Bi, the 35-year-old director, tried to express his love for cinema through this 2 hours and 40 minutes long fiction film, where the director kicked off the movie with a silent movie style.

It was hard to define the movie's story, but it gave the first audience a sense of watching someone's dreams in different shooting styles for different eras of cinema.

The organizers of the Festival introduced Resurrection as a film in which the audience can see Bi's creativity evolving, all the while staying true to the sensory and poetic characteristics that make his work so distinct.

During the press conference held on Friday morning, Bi said that changes in the world have a huge impact on his creations.

"If the world doesn't change that much, I will continue to shoot whatever I feel like. If the world changes a lot, I wonder if there will be a movie that can comfort people. My thoughts are very simple," Bi told the journalists and critics.

For French film critic Gerard Marion, Resurrection was like a universe. "It's something that I rarely saw in cinema, especially by a Chinese director," he told Xinhua.

Bi took the audience to a "very particular universe where we should just let the sound, image, motion and decor take us there," Marion said.

He was very excited to see that the first part of Bi's Resurrection was paying tribute to the film The Waterer Watered, the first fictional film by the French pioneer filmmaker Louis Lumiere.

Bi came to Cannes for the first time in 2015 with his first feature film. The Festival said that he has since established himself as a major player in shaping and defining the new generation of Chinese arthouse cinema.

The 78th Cannes Film Festival will close its curtain on Saturday, with the announcement of the winners of the Competition section.
