IOC Presidency Handed Over: Kirsty Coventry Succeeds Bach as First Female and African Leader

On June 23, Zimbabwean ex-swimmer Kirsty Coventry, 41, received the IOC's "golden key" from Thomas Bach in Lausanne, becoming its first African and female president. The 7-time Olympic medalist, elected in March with a first-round majority, starts her term on June 24. She called her win a "strong signal" for IOC's diversity. Bach expressed confidence in her leadership.
