The Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia said the heatwave will last through Saturday, July 26, with extreme fire risk due to prolonged drought and dry soil conditions. Strong southwesterly winds are expected to worsen the situation in hilly and mountainous areas.
Authorities will send SMS alerts to residents in the most affected southern and eastern districts, including Toplica, Jablanica, Pcinja, Pirot, Nisava, and Zajecar.
The Ministry of the Interior has urged the public to observe fire safety regulations, warning that open burning of vegetation, waste, or crop residue is prohibited and punishable by fines.
More than 3,500 wildfires have been recorded across Serbia since the beginning of July, which represents a record high, including over 1,400 in the past 10 days alone, the ministry informed in a press release.
Authorities have called on citizens to stay alert, limit outdoor activity, and report any fires immediately.
In late June, Serbia was under a red-level weather alert as temperatures in some eastern cities exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.
