US Open roundup: China's Yuan, Shang exit while Garcia, Kvitova end careers in New York
WASHINGTON -- China's Yuan Yue fell short in her US Open opener Monday, losing to 17th seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, while compatriot Shang Juncheng was forced to retire due to injury when trailing Italy's Mattia Bellucci 7-6 (0), 1-6, 6-3, 3-0.
The day also marked emotional farewells for two veterans. France's Caroline Garcia battled hard but lost to Russia's Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round, bringing her career to a close.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, who had announced the US Open would be her final tournament, bowed out with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Diane Parry.
Elsewhere, Mexico's Renata Zarazua staged a stunning comeback to defeat former Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), 7-5. The win marked Zarazua's first career victory over a top-10 opponent, while Keys became the first top-eight seed to exit this year's event.

On the men's side, Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, China, made history by defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (4) for the first-ever men's singles Grand Slam main-draw victory by a player from Hong Kong, China.
Second seed Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the men's second round with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Reilly Opelka.
