China and Greece just got a little closer — in more ways than one.

A new direct air route between Chengdu and Athens officially took off this week, linking southwestern China to the Greek capital for the first time ever.

The maiden Sichuan Airlines flight touched down at Athens International Airport to a festive welcome, complete with traditional performances, flag waving, and ribbon-tying ceremonies led by top dignitaries.

It's the fourth direct air connection between the two nations, but the first to reach into China's vibrant southwest — opening new possibilities for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

"We see this as an important step toward deepening our connection and bonding with the Chinese people," said Greece's Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni.

"And it supports our efforts to promote Greece as a destination that always welcomes visitors from all over the world."

But this isn't just about boosting tourist arrivals. Both sides agree: the skies now carry more than just passengers — they carry potential.

"These flights are not only about industry," said China's Ambassador to Greece, Fang Qiu. "They are about fostering human connections. They promote people-to-people exchanges, which will offer significant convenience for both sides."

The move is part of a growing effort by both Athens and Beijing to strengthen ties across sectors — from business and education to media and technology. It also comes amid a global travel rebound, with Greece eager to welcome more Chinese tourists after years of pandemic disruption.

And the cultural exchange goes both ways. Kefalogianni emphasized the need to encourage Greek travelers — especially younger generations and influencers — to discover China as well.

"I feel it's really important that we have influencers from both sides involved," she said. "It's equally important to encourage Greeks to travel to China. I understand Chengdu is a beautiful region, and I'm very happy that we'll also have the opportunity to explore amazing places in China."

From East to West — and back again — the world is getting smaller, and the ties are growing stronger. With this latest aviation link, the journey between two of the world's oldest civilizations just got a whole lot faster
